Within and beyond

2019, HD video, 07:00 min.

Marcell Esterházy filmed the study of his father Péter Esterházy at length, just as it was left after his death. The stillness of book-piles, papers and personal objects is overwritten by the cooing of his son – the writer’s grandson; he is not able to form words yet, but his speech is comprehensible and continuous – his chanting calls to mind songs of mourning. The superimposition of these two states – the verbal and the non-verbal – symbolises a meeting point between two people, one exiting and one entering, who do not know one another.
